Theology Tidbits: More than the ABC’s

Matthew 26:6-13

Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, poured ointment on the head of Jesus as preparation for His burial. In regard to what she did, Jesus told His disciples that “wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

In many churches today you will hear the “gospel” message presented as the ABC’s (Admit, Believe, Confess or Commit). But the message is so often so shallow, that I believe it produces false conversions. So little message, so little understanding. But here Jesus indicates that the gospel message is not simply the death and resurrection (though that is the heart of the gospel), but really His whole life (see Mark 1:1). The more a person learns about Jesus and the Christian faith, the greater their understanding. If a person truly understands the message of Christ and what the Christian life is all about, when they make a decision for Christ they will know what they are doing, resulting in a true conversion.  The more truth a person hears, the more the Holy Spirit has to work with. For “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”  (Rom 10:17)
